Our Mission
The saola, dubbed an “Asian unicorn”, is a critically endangered animal that scientists have categorically documented in the wild on only four occasions to date
A saola also represents the endangered nature of an active investment manager that legitimately earns its fees by consistently generating alpha
-
We must consistently outperform or we should cease to exist
A saola represents the distinctiveness and rarity of what we are trying to achieve
Consistently generate alpha and and deliver positive returns in any market
Hire and develop not only the most competent professionals but those with impeccable integrity and a passion for fundamental investing

Culture
Build the “dream” firm where we would want to work and structure the business so it is self-sustaining
We take our fiduciary responsibility to investors seriously – we intend to manage clients’ money more carefully than we would manage our own
Saola’s investment objective is to achieve consistent and long-term capital appreciation, and to do so through generating absolute returns from year to year that are less volatile than and exceed the returns of any relevant equity market index on a risk-adjusted basis.
Our investment strategy to achieve this objective is summarized as follows:
We employ a rigorous bottom-up, fundamental research process with a longer-term investment horizon
-
A private equity-like research approach to public equity
We focus on pan-Asian equities, particularly in Greater China, Japan, and Korea with limited exposure to the U.S. and other geographic markets
-
Developed market approach applied to under-developed capital markets
-
Application of global industry knowledge to realize synergies across the Asian region
We seek to generate alpha through exploiting single stock, idiosyncratic risk
-
Each position in the portfolio will have a fundamental, stock-specific thesis
-
We will generally not be making macroeconomic, directional bets and will specifically seek to avoid more macro-driven industries, unless we believe we have some fundamental edge
